Hiring a Criminal Defense Attorney? 3 Questions You Must Ask First

Brian J Smith Nov. 17, 2013

Nobody ever wants to need a criminal defense attorney, but we don’t always get what we want. So if you find yourself in need of a criminal defense lawyer, be sure you ask these three questions before you retain his or her services:

#1 Are You Board Certified?

Goes without saying that you’ll want a lawyer who’s actually a lawyer. Make sure you ask if they’re board certified in criminal law.

#2 How Many Jury Trials Have You Tried?

Since your future is on the line, you don’t want to entrust yourself to somebody who hasn’t had much trial experience.

#3 How Many of These Trials Were in the Past 3 Years?

Lawyering at trial is a skill, and like any other skill it gets rusty if it isn’t kept up. Make sure you hire someone who’s been to trial recently.
